Kids Eat Free - Updated 4/17/2009

If you have kids, like I do, you know that eating out can take quite a bite out of your weekly budget. Eating out doesn't have to drain your wallet, though. There are actually quite a few places around Metro that have either free or very cheap kid's dining options. With most of these "kid" is defined as those under age 12.

Freelanta has reported on several of the following items in the past, but since the Atlanta Journal Constitution ran a story on Thursday, these bear repeating.

Free Cinnabon Bites. This coming wednesday Cinnabon stores are offering free Cinnabon Bites from 5-8 pm as part of their Tax Day Bites promotion.

Free Ice Cream. The VALues blog from 11alive.com is reporting that the Maggie Moo's Ice Cream store in Dunwoody is having an e-CONE-onomic promotion on Tax Day, Tuesday April 15th with a free cone for anyone who walks in the door.

Free Ice Cream #2. Free Cone Day at Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream locations is coming up on Tuesday, April 21st. The promo runs from Noon-8 PM, so come and get your Chunky Monkey or Cherry Garcia!

Free Ribs. On Saturday, May 16th Shane's Rib Shack will be having their second annual Free Rib Day. be one of the first 100 customers in line at any location and you'll get a half-slab of ribs, a large Coca Cola Zero drink and a Shaniac t-shirt with you number in line. the next 250 customers will be offered a buy one, get one free deal. Be warned - though stores open at 11 am on Saturdays, the lines form early.

Cheap Ice Cream. Baskin-Robbins ice cream stores are running their 31 cent Scoop Night promotion on Wednesday, April 29th from 5-10 PM and plan yto honor America's firefighters. Movies in the Park
Children's Healthcare of Atlanta is sponsoring a viewing of Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa on Saturday, April 25 at Beaverbrook Park. Chairs and blankets are welcome, and the movie begins at dusk. Fun for the Family
Freshmen at Georgia Tech are going to attempt to break the world record on April 5th for the "world's largest hopscotch game". They'll try to make a chain that goes 3.14 MILES in length. Free Movies. There's a cool new website currently in beta testing called Snagfilms.com. they currently have over 500 films in their library for you to view, all free of charge. What's really neat about this is you are able to "snag" these and post them in your blog, website, or Facebook pages to share with others. In addition, you can create a "virtual theater" by picking up to 5 films, naming your theater, and then creating a personalized widget that that you can email to your family and fiends. Free $25 Gift Card. To celebrate the grand opening of their newest mall mobile phone kiosk, Best Buy is giving away $25 Best Buy gift cards and a complimentary phone upgrade check. Free Cosmetics and Consultations. Ulta stores have several things that are worth noting for next week. On Saturday, April 11 they are offering a free consultation and trial of Smashbox cosmetics with Smashbox makeup artists. Free Movie Tickets Tomorrow

OK, folks, you have to act fast on this one! If you or your kids like Hannah Montana, get down to the Atlanta Ikea store tomorrow (Saturday) morning before Noon. Free pizza (almost). While I generally don't like to give out personal infomation to any site, if you don't mind doing so you can score a $20 rebate on your on-line pizza order from Pizza Hut. Once you register for their CheckoutFree program and place an online order, they'll send you an email confirmationto claim your $20 cashback rebate. The catch to this is that you'll start getting offers from up to 100 of their vendor partners. To aviod getting all this email spam, check out the next freebie.

Anonymous e-mail. To avoid getting spam email when you fill out online forms or orders, try using whats called a temporary email account from guerrillamail.com. How is works is you're given an email address that is valid to receive messages for 15 minutes and send for 60 minutes, more than enough time to receive and reply to confirmation emails many sites send you when you register for their promotion. After that, no email account and no spam.

Cagle’s Dairy. A working dairy farm in Hickory Flat with educational tours for families and school children. The farm features a dairy tour, calf barn, a cow train to ride, hayrides and bonfires, a seasonal vegetable and flower garden and a “kiddie korrall” playground. Centennial Olympic Park. The 21-acre park in downtown Atlanta was originally constructed to be the public gathering place for the 1996 Olympic Games. Baby's First Circus. Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus has a program called Baby's First Circus that offers a free circus ticket to all children up to 12 months old and living in the United States. Once you sign up for the program you are able to print out an online voucher that can be exchanged for a free ticket good for any performance with no expiration date. You are also able to download a personalized baby certificate for your child. The program is limited to one child per household, but parents of multiples are allowed to get a voucher for each child.



If you or someone you know is an Asian immigrant, Microsoft has a program that offers free or low cost technical training called Elevate America. In Georgia, the program is administered by the Asian American Service Agency and provides 20 weeks of skill training and an additional 6 weeks of job placement assistance. Publix Supermarkets has several clubs that might interest you, all of which offer some freebies.
The Publix Wine Guide, for those over 21, offers a free subscription to the Publix Grape (TM), a quarterly wine magazine as well as access to a site that answers all your questions about wine in simple English.
The Publix Baby Club is geared towards newborns to two year olds. Members receive Publix Baby Club (R) newsletters and coupons (all parents need these) that are timed to your child's growth. In addition, all first time parents also get a free copy of the American Academy of Pediatrics' "Caring for Your Baby and Young Child", which sells for $20 in stores.
For toddlers and pre-schoolers ages 2 to 4, there is Publix Preschool Pals. Here you get parenting information, a quarterly newsletter, an activity book for 2 year olds, and a CD ROM for 3 year olds full of educational activities and games. My own kids belonged to this and loved the games on the CD ROM.
For families of all ages there is the Publix FamilyStyle (R) magazine, which is published four times a year in february, May, August and November. This magazine has, according to Publix "the season's best parenting insights, kid-friendly recipes, time-saving tips, safety news, fitness facts, and more to help your family thrive everywhere life takes you, from the breakfast table to the classroom to the soccer field and back home."
Finally, and one of my personal favorites, is Upromise. While not a program by Publix, they are a member of this national program where you can help save for a child's college education simply by doing what you do everyday, shopping. All you do is register participating credit cards or store affinity cards. Everytime you make a purchase with that card at a participating company, restaraunt or store, such as Publix, a portion of that sale, from 1-5% depending on the purchase, is credited to your Upromise account. You can set up an interest earning 529 educational account for your savings to be deposited directly in to. Also, once an account is established you can have your freiends and relatives link their cards to your child's account to have the savings multiply even faster.

If you don't mind sharing your email address with a company, there are some pretty good offers for free food and other goodies out there. Don't want to give out your personal email address for this,? Just sign up for an email account just for this purpose at any major ISP provider such as Google, Yahoo or AOL.

Bucca di Beppo, an Italian restaraunt chain with a location in the Northpoint area of Alpharetta, has a eClub you can sign up for. When you join, you get exclusive offers via email, a free birthday dessert and a treat on your anniversary.



Chick-fil-a restaraunts have long had a tradition of giving away free food, but there's a catch. If you are one of the first 100 customers in line at any of their store openings across the country, you'll receive a free Chick-fil-a meal once a week for a year. Lines, however, usually form more than 24 hours in advance of a store opening, so be prepared to wait. I have also heard reports of a "special" treat for anyone who waits in line with a cow costume on. They even have a future restaraunt openings link on their website to keep track of future openings. Alas, the closest opening to Atlanta through March is in Florida.



Chili's Bar & Grill also has an email club. When you join their you get a free chips and queso.



For ice cream lovers, Cold Stone Creamery, with multiple locations in metro Atlanta, has a birthday club. When you sign up for this you'll get free coupons, special offers and a coupon for a free ice cream cone on your birthday.

Proctor & Gamble is offering a free sample of it's new Pantene Expressions Shampoo with registration to their P&GbrandSampler club. In addition to getting the Pantene offer, membership also enables you to get future samples from P & G automatically.

Cheap Eats

In honor of their 75th anniversary, Steak 'n Shake restaraunts across the country are offering Steakburgers for only 75 cents which lasts through March 29th. In addition, Steak 'n Shake is now offering a "snack pack", consisting of a single Steakburger, small fries and regular coke for just $2.89. Four additional meals have also been added to their menu, each under $4. A family of four can easily eay here for under $20.

OK, so money's tight. That doesn't mean that you still can't do things for next to nothing or even sometimes for free. Below are some examples of things that are out there.

Free Credit Report
  • You may have seen those ads on TV that offer you a free credit report. What you may not know is that they are often come with strings such as enrollment in a credit monitoring program for an additional fee. What they don't bother telling you is that you can get a free credit report from each of the three major credit reporting agencies every 12 months with no strings attached.

Free Education

  • The Massachusetts Institue of Technolgy offers a program called Open Course Ware (OCR) where most of its course materials are avaiable for free, including lectures, video and notes. You can't earn credit or a degree through this program, but its a good way to learn something about just about everything MIT teaches.

  • There's not much anything better than ice cream, especially if it is for free. Once a year on "Free Cone Day", Ben & Jerry's gives away a free scoop to everyone as part of their anniversary celebration at participating stores. Last year it was held on April 29, so look for it around that date. If you see something about this in your email, just know it's not a hoax and enjoy!

  • Ever want to travel for free? You can if you organize and travel with a large group. Many tour operators offer free travel tickets to those who organize a group of 40 or more people. Also, most major cruise lines offer a similar program for those who organize groups of 15 or more. To do this, you just need to find a good travel agent who is willing to work with you as a "group leader". This can be a great opportunity if you are organizing a family or class reunion .

  • While you are probably aware that you can save money on groceries by using coupons, did you know that you can actually get free groceries? Sometimes you might have to take advantage of buy one get one free offers, but not always. There are several very good grocery cost saving websites available including CouponMom and GetGroceriesFree.com which were started by real moms. They scour the internet and hundreds of store advertisements for the best deals, help compile shopping lists and even tell you what coupon to use and when for the best available deals.
  • the largest grocery store chain in the country, Kroger, even has some pretty cool ways for you to save. If you have a Kroger rewards card, you can automatically link your card to offers avaiable online. When you check out using your card, the coupons are applied. No clipping! They are also offering coupons for download to your cell phone via text messages.

  • There are literally hundreds of sites available where you can get free product samples from companies, but you must register your name and email address on most. Products available range from everything from lipstick to candy to baby products to cleaners. For example, most cosmetics makers offer freebies through third party partners. Just enter freebie or sample and the name of the product you are looking for in your favorite seach engine's URL bar. You are usually limited to 1 per household every 8 weeks, though.
  • For samples of feminine products go directly to the manufacture's website such as Platex.

Free TV and Movies

  • Who says you have to belong to Blockbuster or NetFlicks to get movies, or even subscribe to cable or satellite to watch TV? There are now several ways to watch your favorite programs for free.
  • YouTube offers more than just viewer created videos thesedays. there are now "channels" created and mantained by music artists, major studios and even the even Pope Benedict has a channel officially maintained by the Vatican.
  • One of the best sites currently available is Hulu, where you can watch full length episodes of shows like 24, Family Guy, 30 Rock and The Office. the only catch, aside from registering for an account is that, like real TV, you have to watch commercials. But hey, it free!

  • Want to pamper yourself? Try a massage, then, and there is no need to spend up to $100 on this. Many massage scholls offers free massages for those who are willing to let their students practice on. Just look for massage schools in your area to call and inquire.
  • Also, local day spas may offer a free or reduced rate "introductory" massage to new clients. All you have to do is ask.

  • You don't have to pay for free music, even with Apple's iTunes store. Visit sites such as YourFreeMusicDownloads.com, FreeMusicDownloadSpot.com or Sprialfrog.com to take advantage of this where you can find many original artists, including up and coming unsigned artists. All that is required is registration.
  • Even subscription services such as Napster, eMusic and iTunes offer free music if you are a member. for example, iTunes offers a Free on iTunes section that usally has several free downloadable songs and videos each week. Just click and enjoy.

  • The library is not the only place these days where you can find free books. There is now a way that you can clear out those unwated, previously readd books you have and get somethng you want. All you have to do is join an online book exchange such as PaperBack Swap or Title Trader. After you register, you get credit for each book you list available for trade or send to another member. You use these credits to get the books you want that are posted as available from other members. Your only cost is postage, which usually runs less than $2 when you use MediaMail through the U.S. Postal Service, which is way cheaper than the cost of buying a new book at the store.
